Weird food combos

You are being warned about the food combinations ahead and you continue reading this piece on your own responsibility. The author will not be liable for you feeling weird and not be able to eat for a few days after reading this article.

Have you heard about anyone spreading tooth paste on sliced bread and calling it food? Yes, I know a person who did that. Not any longer though. I am talking about weird food combos.

Street Foods are the criminals

A few street food elements like cheese, mayonnaise and ketchup have been guilty of creating some of the weirdest combos I have eaten.

Can you imagine somebody topping your misal with cheese? Please don’t talk to me about fusion food, the combination of cheese on misal is the second in line weirdest food I have eaten under the name of fusion. Believe me it was called Lasagne misal!!! I won’t name the place, because there is other good stuff that the restaurant serves.

Some other place thrives on selling kathi rolls. I generally do not prefer eating at such quick food places. I mean it. Every kathi roll served hear is called a wrap, the wrap must have mayonnaise.

For some of you who have eaten a really good mutton boti kathi roll, will swear by the spice and the sourness coming from the green chutney, the flavours the mutton is cooked in, some raw onions and sprinkle of chaat masala and a squeeze of lemon. I hope you can see how beautiful this whole combination sounds; let alone the heaven it brings on your tongue.

Now, imagine someone adding loads of mayonnaise or cheese in this and calling it food. I am sure you felt your tongue shuddering of the torture it was going through. I call it

Individual Choices

Some of the other weird food combos happen due to individual choices.  These are mostly governed by the food parents pass down as food.

daliya and egg

Like in our house Dad always liked Sweet Daliya along with boiled eggs, yeah, I find it weird too. He probably must have had a porridge with boiled eggs, in one of his visits abroad or somewhere and then created this desi version.

But it stuck. We enjoy it till this day and now my daughter loves it too.

The other individual choice is when you don’t have enough at home, but you feel lazy to go out and buy and you don’t have enough money to Swiggy in.  The typical phenomenon of “Aaj kuch banane ka mann nahin kar raha”The next example is something related to this.

I remember another weird breakfast that I had at a friends’ house. Believe me he ate chapatis with ketchup and chai. No don’t look at me like that. I have dipped my chapati in tea multiple times, in fact I love dipping leftover puris in my chai so often. But ketchup and tea? Imagine that!!!

The other could be when you have too many leftovers. This we all are guilty of. Take everything which is left in the house and put it on your plate. This phenomenon is called “Emptying the refrigerator”

Another factor of Individual choice is when you are travelling and find something on your plate which you have never seen before and it does not fit your “Mental description of food”.

The last time I went to Bangalore, I went to MTR for lunch instead of the regular breakfast bit. I tried to experiment and ordered something like Bonda Soup. When the dish came in front of me, there were 4 balls of soft udad dal wadas floating in yellow dal.

We have all eaten Medu vada but this was not that neither it was mysore wada, this was the wada used mostly in making dahi wada. I was a bit disappointed after looking at it, but it was overall a very cooling dish. It was extremely light on stomach and very peaceful on the tongue too. Simple and distinct flavours, soft bondas and lovely dal to go with it.

Now this was weird to me because I had never eaten something like this before.

Another most interesting part is that individuals in the name of creativity do innovate a lot weird combos. Have many friends who do that. Even I do that in the kitchen and “sell it to my family as creativity”.

Nobody likes turnips in the house except for me. Knowing the stubborn myself, I have to get this in the winters, have a fight and then somehow, to save the money from being wasted, have to finish this.

I did the same thing this year and just when they were about to become stale, decided to make a burger patty out of it. So made a nice tasting (as per me) turnip patty, got good whole wheat buns and the works to serve a good burger to family and they would not know. The first bite and I was almost thrown the plate at me. They were good enough to finish their plates as we are taught that we should not waste food. It was a victory of sorts but weird for them for sure.

These were just some of the thoughts that I gathered on how weird food is good or bad as per me. I have experienced plenty of such weird food combos.

Another warning or a disclaimer as you may call it, This list is weird as per the author, it does not point any fingers to anyone enjoying such food or guilty of creating such food. All I am saying is please stay away from me.
